how to dither?

hi there, recorded some tracks in sonar at 48 khz and 24 bit. now i need to burn them to a cd...exported them as a 16 bit stereo wav. file, but i only get hiss from the cd. i'm guessing that's because it still at 48 khz. I don't see any where to convert it to 44.1? How do I do it? TIA,

You can't do it in Sonar.

And BTW, dithering is done when changing bit rate, not sample rates.
 
ok....i knew that . i'll see if I can figure it somewhere. Maybe Ozone will do it for me?

Ozone won't do it. Wavelab or Sound Forge will.

Also, there's some free ones on the net. I did a search for "free sample rate conveters" and came up with this:

There were others as well. I can't vouch for any of them, but maybe someone will come along who's used them.
 
until you get a good SRC(sample rate converter) program like samplitude 7, wavelab, sound forge, etc... you should just record at 44.1
 
For a very good technical discussion of dithering, when to do it and why some methods are better, visit http://www.izotope.com and check out the dithering guide under ozone. I downloaded the guide and did not understand more than 3 words. The 3 I did understand was "never dither twice". Best to read the document yourself.
 
ok, which program would you reccomend? I've heard of Soundforge and wavelab......I can't go back and re-record it again. With these, will it be best to record at the hightest bit rate and sample rates that I have. I've read a little bit about the dithering process and how it's beneficial to record at the highest bit rate, is the sample rate affected the same way? Thanks for your advice....man now, i'm two days behind on this cd! :(
