OK, first off, i am Fairly new to Cubase and EXTREMELY new to MIDI/VST.

I watched a very long video that showed how to create a drum loop in Cubase, whcih was very helpful, but there are a few things I can't figure out.

I have loaded Addictive Drums demo into Cubase and created a VST track with it. In the video the guy goes into the Drum Editor to place hits for the drums. This is where I am stuck. I go to Midi --> Open drum Editor and it is grayed out. Do I have to have something set to allow access to this???

Second part is a few places I have seen they say to set the channel output to 10. Why 10, is that normal, and what does this output do?

Third, he just did a loop, how do you construct a song with parts?

i dont know about addictive drums, but maybe you could open it with the VST instruments panel and work it that way?

But that won't get him the drum track ;)

Shadow, it's simple, you need to specify that it is a drum track. Simply click on the button with the little drumstick icon in it. You'll find it in several places, probably the easiest place would be the track inspector. That's the left most strip that shows the track parameters when you click on a track.

You also have to have something in the track, it cant be blank. So create a midi track, set the right and left loop points (ctrl/click for the left alt/click for the right) and then just double click in the space between them to create the loop. Assigning a drum map will also automatically invoke the drum editor. You can switch between editor modes at will since the track does not really change (its always a midi track) so you can edit via the key, score, or drum editor. The in place editor will only work in key edit mode though

AH HA, One step closer. I use the draw tool to create a "section or part", then I can open the editor and create it. THen I supose to create the rest o my drum parts I just repeat the same step on that track or copy and past teh same part for use later???

That would be the "fill loop" function

Is that a function in Cubase? The song I am trying to do drums for will have an intro/verse/prechorus/chorus/verse/prechorus/chorus/bridge/presolo/solo/chorus out sections. I actually already have it on my Roland R-70 drum machine, but want to redo it because I don't like the sounds and don't wat to record it as audio.

Is there a way to just take the parts created in my drum machine and plop thme into cubase so I can remap the souns to a different VST kit?

if you can dump the midi file, that would be the easiest. I am not familiar with the R70. Other wise the way to do it would be to slave the device, send clock and then just record the midi it is putting out. Then just chop up and edit each part to suite. If the loops are quantitised tight (say 16th or 32nds) set the quantitize to match in cubase to make up for the delay

Man...I am starting to think it is easier to mic a drummer ;) I spend more time trying to figure out how to get the sound on to my computer than practicing the music.

OK, here is what I have been able to do. I can create a Midi track, draw out the section, and open the editor to place the hits and output to the Addictive drums VST to get my sounds. But, can I use the VST to be my input to lay my basic beat. I want to hit record and click the Addictive drums bass drum and snare and have them plop the hits on my midi track, then I can open the drum editor and edit it or add hit hat etc. I do not see Addictive drums as an "input" choice though, only All Midi. Is this not something you can do with VST, use the interface to tap out your part? Or do I always have to use a Midi hardware device like a keyboard.

One hint ...

If you create a new midi part on the track in question, you then just double click that part and you are thrust into the editor you speak of.

Easy as can be ...
