Forgive me....I'm a drummer.

Just bought my first kick mic, an AKG D112. Also bought a nice weighted boom stand with a standard thread. This AKG mic comes with an adapter with a smaller diameter thread that I've never seen. However, the stem on the AKG mic is too narrow to fit in a standard mic adapter.

Help!?!

There is typically a sleeve fitting that is removable. Maybe the mic stand does not have it.

If not, you can buy one. Examples of the thingy's here

Hang on, let me get this straight in my head;

The D112 came with the mic clip for it but the thread in it is too small to fit onto your stand, and the mic won't fit into another clip because the stem of the mic is too small? if so, then the thread in the D112 mic clip should just be an adaptor that can come out so that it can screw on to mic stands with larger threads

Yep, the D112 has its own mic clip. Smaller than most mics. I just looked at mine, and you are correct. There is an adapter on the mic clip itself on mine, for the smaller size. What smaller equates to, is beyond my knowledge.

Duct tape works too. lol!

Does the smaller adaptor not unscrew from the clip?

And with the adaptor taken out, does it then fit a bigger thread on the mic stand?

(i'm not aiming this at you jimmy, i'm assuming you already have it working fine :D)

:thumbs up:

Mic stands come in several sizes. The two most popular these days are 3/8" 16 threads per inch, and 5/8" 27 TPI. Sounds like you have a 3/8" thread, or else a 5/8" with an adapter inside. Those sizes cover almost all the modern mics, and adapters are easy to find. Some camcorder mics use a 1/4" pipe fitting.

(Old mics can be a real pain. The old British mics used 1/2"-26, and the old RCAs and Japanese mics use a massive 1/2" pipe fitting. Soviet mics are something else again.)

What the smaller thread equates to? That would be 3/8-16 UNC. It's a standard thread. You can find it at the hardware store. The larger size is 5/8-27 or something like that. Not standard at all unless you're talking about mic stands.

Duct tape is standard.

Hey, good timing! I haven't run into any of the others you mentioned yet, cool info.

Thanks for the help! I feel like a moron/drummer!

Indeed I noticed the notches in the threads in the mic adapter that came with the AKG. Just used a dime and unscrewed it.

Ready to get some boom going!

Thanks again to everyone!

I think this has been sorted, but the first time I ran into this was with a Sennheiser mic adapter. I assumed it was a European standard vs. American standard thing. I hadn't heard of unscrewing the little piece inside of the mic mount until I went to the music store trying to find some conversion adapter. Yeah, they had a good chuckle as I tried to explain what I was needing.
