Hi everyone, please check out my new recording as I have some questions about it as I'm new to mixing / mastering:

Changing Me by Harry Court - YouTube

1. How is the mix all together - any feedback is appreciated.

2. I got told to increase the high end / add more high end... does this involve just using eq?

Many thanks for any replies,
Harry!

1. Mix sounds great. Drums are a bit over-compressed. You can tell especially when the drummer goes to the ride, it sounds really clicky on each ride hit. It'd be nice to hear the kick a bit more too, maybe add a little attack by boosting around 2-3K. But it's nothing I'd worry about, the mix sounds really great right now. Maybe next time you might experiment with double tracking the guitars? I have a feeling that guitar line would sound really cool double tracked (and panned).

2. I wouldn't really say the mix needs more high end... maybe just a tiny bit, but nothing major. This involves only EQ. To brighten up the whole mix you can just put an EQ on the master fader and play with a high shelf.

The song is great, by the way. Nice work!

Great tune! Nice performance too.

I agree with GP on the drums. Possibly, you are feeling the need for high end in the mix, because the drums are not sounding natural. The snare sucks the life out of the track, because it has no 'air' to it. Try parallel compression, if you want punch out of the drums. IME, squashing the whole kit, or even pieces of it (that hard) does not work well.

Where are you applying the compression, that makes the snare sound 'sucked back'?
