I just got another delivery this morning - picked up an extra Marshall mxl 603 and another sm57.

It's a little bit of a scorcher today, and I'm guessing the inside of the delivery van must have been well over 100 degrees. My mics were very warm when I took them out of the box.

Do you think being exposed to that kind of heat for a while could have damaged or melted someting? :)

Thanks!

If it was a Mr Microphone maybe Id worry.

But the melting point of most of the components of those microphones are alot higher. But to make yourself feel better, try reading the documentation of the product to see the operating tempatures. Most electronic gear specifies it somewhere as part of its qualification for ISO, UL or other certs.

I suppose I'm not as worried about the 57. You could probably bake one of those as topping on your pizza, I suppose. And although you probably wouldn't like the taste, the mic would probably be fine. I'm just a little worried about the condenser.

Thanks.

The 57 makes a lousy topping for pizza. I know cause I've tried it. The plastic capsule was not bad, but I had some dental problems from chewing the mic body. These days, I use the diapragms from old U47's. Much better! You know what they say: better ingredients=better pizza.

The good news is that the 57 passed my sledgehammer test. I wish i could say that the C12 did the same. The bad news is that both failed the flamethrower test, so if at all possible, try to keep those mics away from propane torches. And always store them in plastic zip lock backs in your freezer when you aren't using them.

Ziplock bags are key. Freezerburn really kills the high-frequency response.

Never had a problem with mics in extreme high temperatures here in the desert though I don't tend to use condensers on gigs they've worked fine also and handle the heat better than I do. Since it's out in the car with the rest of the stuff, my beta 57 should be about 130 degrees when I go to use it this evening.

Amps are a different matter, and tend to get cranky when left in the sun on poolside gigs.
