I love those decks but there's something especially sweet about that 351.:)

I've worked with both machines for a while in the past. I really can't imagine trying to pick up that case with the ATR-100 sitting in it. The transport alone weighs a ton. Interesting remote for the 351. The one that I used had a row of remote buttons for all the machines built into the console. We had a 351 stereo, 351 mono, a Presto stereo and an Ampex 350-4 half inch 4 track and a column of remote buttons for each machine. We didn't have any channel arm remote buttons though, so I had to get up and walk to the machine to arm the channel I needed to record on. That ATR had the best tape handling characteristics of any machine that I have ever used or seen. The others were built like tanks.

I have a local guy here selling a 351 Ampex with something called Inovonics electronics (preamp, power supply etc)? He wants $250. Should I resist?:eek:

Inovonics is a solid state replacement electronics package that was built for the machine. I can remember them from the '70's. I say gopher it.

That would be the mid '70's. The studio was part of a tech school in Minneapolis (Brown Institute). I taught the recording lab portion of thier audio technology class in exchange for studio time. I would teach and then sell my racked up time to various bands in the twin cities. Eventually the console was replaced by a 16x8 console and I purchased a Tascam 80-8 when they first came out that I would bring in for sessions and patch into the system through the patchbay. It was nice going from 4 track to 8 track at the time.

Did you buy it.... did you buy it????

An intervention (or maybe an exorcism:D) was performed on me and I had decided not to do it, for my own good!:D Seriously, I've got too much stuff already. Need to focus, need to focus [constantly reminding myself].:D:o
