i have heard that Win98 can only support 512 megs without actually getting slower... so how much can XP actually handle?

More than your motherboard supports, don't worry about it :)

3 gig I think

Hey Slackmaster - a friend has a P4 2 gig with XP and 2 x scsii 15000 rpm drives and he says it cooks. never crashed yet. he also has a 1.7gig athelon and he reckons it stubbles up against the P4

any comments??

cheers

i've seen a few computers with XPPro having 2gig or ram in them so i wouldn't worry about how much it can handle. i've seen 98se slow down after changing from 256mb of ram to 512... i'd look into 2000pro or XPPro...i've seen a few Daw's that crash under XPHome...i use XPPro on my daw and i don't have any problems

John, comment about what? The 1.7 Athlon keeping up with the 2G P4? That doesn't suprise me at all, really. It is a known fact that the Athlon is a faster processor. Or do you mean XP? I've been thinking about moving to XP myself just because I can't stand to not have the latest shit...so far I've only setup 2 WinXP machines and I did have some software problems on both. However, in both cases XP said "this software will not run on XP, do you still want to install", and when I installed, the software ran fine.

I'm going to insert a personal opinion/observation here that nobody should take as "official record": All of my experience with Athlon machines has been negative. Even the "sweet" homebrew machine I built my girlfriend, that is at least on paper much better than my DAW. Fast, yes; stable and quirk free, no. I don't blame AMD, but I do wish they'd make a go at their own chipset some day. Anyways, I'm not saying that every Athlon machine will be quirky and annoying...they just aren't batting very high for me right now. I no longer hate VIA, I despise them.

on the processors, I just recently read a report that was done with a P4 2Ghz and an AMD AthlonXP 1.53Ghz and the Athlon was giving the much higher clocked P4 a run for its money...
