I dont know the prices of studio racks, but I built one. It's 32" tall 19" wide. It is made of MDF (medium density fiberbord) and aluminum L braces. I hand drilled and tapped #10-32 holes every 5/8" allong the aluminum. I am a purist, I wanted to build it from scratch. So every part is unique. The total damage was $25.00. I will post pictures and a diagram, when I can get this crappy scanner to work. (my next investment will be a digital cam.)

How much money did you save? It depends on what your time is worth to you.

If you really want to save money...... and time.

Buy three 8 foot 2x4's. $1.99 each. Buy one box of 2 inch construction screws for $4.99. Make a 2x4 frame screwed together with construction screws. (cut and use two of the 2x4s for the upright pieces and cut the other for the horizontal pieces and use a drill to assemble) Buy one box of lock washers that fit the screws for about a 89 cents. Install the rack units by running construction screws through the lock washer, then through the rack ears... into the 2x4 frame. (If you really want to splurge... buy a $2 can of black spray paint and paint the thing before you install the rack units. :)

So you screw the pieces of gear directly in the 2x4? I have built one like that before. Though this one I built the actual pieces of bracing that you screw #10 machine screws into, and grounds all the chasis together. Plus the mdf is really sharp looking, takes paint well, and dosnt splinter at all. Plus I put wheels on it so you can roll it around the studio.

I am thinking of selling them at my local musc store for about 99.00. I dont know if they will sell? I hope I can post some pics soon.
