How much gain on my pre?

Hi everybody,

I was wondering how much gain i can put on my SSL Xchannel pre(i use it with a U87 Ai mic) in order to get a nice fat present signal. The maximun gain goes up to 72db. I'm currently working around 42-48 db with the output set at o db with a little bit of comprssion(3.1). I ask this question because a still have a lot of headroom in my sequencer meters and the waveform is kinda of small.Is sound ok to me though but i'd like to know your opinions.

Is your sequencer set up for +4 db input?
That could be a cause of your low levels.
As far as how much gain gives a fat, present sound....well I think that one is up to your ears.
 
I donno.. How you do that in logic 7?
I use the SSL optional AD card connected via aes/ebu to the motu 896HD, but there is no switch for -10db or +4db on the mic pre or on the sound card.
