I was told that b/c of engines, Logic and Samplitude sound better than SONAR. How much better is this?

Actually, a while back there was a thread on audioforums.com in which there was a huge debate about this. One or two guys maintained that in Samplitude a mixdown sounded noticeably better than in other apps. Something to do with the oversampling engine. Another guy wouldn't have any of it and kept doing sum to zero tests showing that waves played through Samplitude were exactly the same as waves played through other apps. However, when he tried it with a mixdown, he couldn't get the files to null. That proved to everybody that a mixdown with the same conditions can sound different in another app. The guy became quite interested in Samplitude.

Mixing itself is a pretty simple procedure, but people always forget about some key stages where sound quality can be an issue (i used to be one of those people). Dither, for one, since the audio application will be converting from its internal bit depth (probably 32bit) to 24 or 16bit.

It is entirely possible for an audio mixer application to have an impact on sound quality, just as a plugin or any DSP would have an impact on sound quality. How big of a difference is one of those questions that's difficult to answer.
