I might have posted similar stuff in the newbie forum, but I thought I might get more answers here.
How many stereo cd quality tracks will I be able to play back with this computer?(speed wise not hard disk size wise):

2.8ghz p4
512ddr 333
80gb s-ata disk
staudio dsp2000 c-port soundcard.
865-pe chipset.

Is there any point thinking about a memory upgrade? for say 24 channels?

Depends on how many plug-ins you are using, applications runnung, anyway that's an unanswerable question. Just give it a run and see. How many tracks you can run has to do with your processor speed as well. It's not how much memory you have, it's how fast you computer can think about what's going on

Simply put: A shitload.
By the way, it's uncommon to measure the amount of tracks in stereo pairs. Most recordings are done in mono. The mixdown however usually results in at least stereo.
Furthermore 'cd quality' or in other words 16 bits at 44.1kHz doesn't cut it anymore in today's homerecording. Think 24 bits.
Last but not least: Choose your forum wisely and post your question just once. That's how we like it here. :)

What you have to consider is this:

CD quality is 16bit audio at a 44000hz sample rate. That in itself already takes up alot of juice.

However, when you're recording and mixing, you want 24bit audio at much higher sample rates. That of course is going to take up alot more.

Looking at your specs, I'd say that your running a desktop computer; it probably wasn't designed for audio in a audio editing level. I would guess that you could probably do no more than ten 24bit mono tracks without problems. Latency could be a big issue.

Of course, you can give it a try and see what results you get.

r u sure thats all? what even if I dedicate 40GB of my HD to recording?

there is a utility at prorec.com called dskbnch.exe or it might be diskbench.exe (look in software section) that will give you a rough indication of the max num of trks. its just a guide.
