In every walk of life I've had contact with so far in my life, the fact that someone is a "professional" and is paid to do something often has very little to do with their experience, competency, and knowledge... I would never automatically assume that.

There are people with $99 4 tracks making better recordings than some "pro" studios can turn out. So whats that tell you?
Also it is obvious to some "pros" who the wannabes are.
But I consider no one here less cool or knowing. Nor would I call them an "amature" because they have never used an SSL console. You next question is, Wally, have you ever used a SSL? Well yes I have. Am I a pro? Hell no. Colorado doesn't have any kind of music scene. There are 4 bigger than home studios here. Do I know my shit? Yes and no, I learn more here each and every day. Could I do this for a living? Yes, I am certified per the state of Colorado, and could get a job working for a studios in another location. Is Bruce a pro? Yes, but he's also Canadian, so what can you do.
The moral to this long drawn out story................nothing really, I'm just trying to raise my post count

pretty ordinary? thats the FIRST time i heard that about my beats thx for peeping though...i dunno if yall got PMS but this post wasn't suppose to PISS no one off...the only f*cker i tried to piss of is Voxvendor for being an idiot...and alchuck i gave my reason y i wanted to know who was pro. u helped me wita lot of stuff already i appreciate it...and if u missed i was looking for pros because since this how they make a living that have to be hungry for knowledge to about music so they can stay employed as for me i don't so i have to go to school and learn other stuff that occupies my time and get a job etc... while PROS just sit in a studio 24/7 365...now u get it?

Hey, Blue Bear - do they ever let you out of the studio or do you really have to sit in it "24/7 365" - I guess you get one day off every leap year 
Teacher - you can ignore everything I say, I'm just a hobbiest. Though, if I were you, I'd listen to everyone, accumulate all the knowledges and opinions and ACTUALLY THINK FOR YOURSELF about which makes the most sense. That being said, weighting people like Bruce (Blue Bear) higher does make sense, but there are an awful lot of talented people here, a lot of which don't fall into pro category.
Let's face it, this is the HOME RECORDING BBS, right? Pros are icing - and they have different priorities (and budgets) then us mortal folk.

Umm.... Teacher looking at your post I can see that you were trying to make a joke, but that it did not translate well. Maybe you're from western Canada?
Anyway you are right that some folks have the attitude that ".... if you dont use XXXX you are an idiot". This applies to both software and hardware. Most of the "pros" (i.e. not me) will have worked with a variety of stuff over the years and so they will have their favorites. You just have to remember that these things are just tools to an end, and any tool that can get the job done can be useful. I use Cakewalk because I started tinkering with it years ago and it works for me. If I was a "pro" I would want to have at least a passing knowlage in several systems, because a client might bring me a project that had been started on another system. Or want me to work in someone elses studio that only had brand X software available. Pro Tools is obviously a widely-used studio favorite so I think a "pro" would want to know how it works, even if it was not their first choice.
Anyways my only advise to you is to decide how far you want to go in this field - a hobbiest like me or a "pro" like Bruce - and then look for tools that work for your situation.

SONAR is the newest update of Cakewalk. I don't have it, may not get it for awhile, because right now Cakewalk 9 is doing everything I need.
In general terms you are correct, SONAR / Cakewalk / Protools / Cubase are all software packages that do both MIDI sequencing and digital audio recording / mixing / etc. I have seen Cubase on a Mac, it seem quite similar to Cakewalk, but I have no hands-on. I tried to install the free downloadable version of Protools but it refused to function. I would imagine that given its much heftier price Protools should have more capability than the others. What any of these products can do for you is going to be limited by how much computing power you have.
