How many audio tracks can you play?

I used to boast around that my DAW is capable of recording unlimitted number of tracks. Now that I'm at the mixing and mastering state of my project, I discover something unpleasant. As I convert MIDI tracks to audio Sonar is experiencing dropouts. The most I could play (4 minutes long song) without drop out is 10 tracks. Is there any work around? Or do I just have to resort to sub-mixing? Any tip would be appreciated.

The dropouts probably aren't a Sonar thing, it's a system thing. Seems like maybe your processor can't handle the load.

What are your specs??

You're right. It's a system thing. Not Sonar's fault. My system is 1.4G with 512KRAM Celeron. It's just that I was able to record an impressive number of MIDI tracks and now I'm unable to convert them to audio. (How helpful will it be to get a 2.6G machine? --- just dreaming at this point) Like I said any tip on converting the audio tracks would be appreciated.

Very helpfull, but don't forget a good soundcard also helps.

And what latency are you running? Higher latency means more CPU power for tracks...

My latency is around 23. My soundcard is aardvark Q10.
I won't be able to get a new machine for this project yet. :-(

Your computer sounds to me like it should have plenty of horse power. I'm running a P III Coppermine and I play back 30+ tracks without a burp. Of course, plugs ins skew that number as they're added but 24 tracks and a few plugs is no problem at all. You might want to play with with the buffer settings and make sure your hard drive has the DMA enabled.

I am running Win98se on a PIII 800MHz machine.

So far I don't know my limits, but I can play 20 tracks of audio with no problem. :)

Thanks. I think I have gone through the optimization check list in the past. I'll do that again. It would be nice to be able to play 20 tracks. That's more than enough for me.

I appreciate all your help.

You defrag your hard drive, yet? I had this same problem...even worse with me, since I could only do about 7 simultaneous tracks on an older 5400 RP drive. Defrag and BOOM! The sky's the limit...

Follow all the above advice. However, you should be able to increase your track count by raising the number of buffers and increasing your latency. For mixing purposes, you should be able to live with 300 ms of latency or even higher.

As Track Rat said, the amount and type of plug-ins is also a very key factor. For ex., reverb tends to be very taxing on a system (and Waves RVerb is extremely taxing). In that situation, if you have multiple tracks using the same effect, you might want to look at running the plugins on an Aux Bus.

Also, how are you currently playing back your midi tracks? If you're using a DXi, you don't need to convert them to audio. They will mixdown as is.

As you suggested, submixing is also another workaround. You can do this and archive the individual tracks (make sure you archive and not just mute, as archived tracks don't use any CPU power). However, as everyone has already mentioned, your system should easily do more than 10 tracks. I have a 733 Mhz P3, and I can get close to 20 with a reasonable amount of plugins. I do, however, keep the latency setting relatively high.

I tried to defrag and my system said I don't need to.
I have played with various buffers and latency settings. They didn't help much.

I'm playing JV1010 MIDI, so I really do need to convert them to audio. Right now, I'm archiving finished tracks while converting newer ones. I'm going to have a problem when I un-archive all the tracks. So unfortunately, I'm thinking about submixing the drums tracks. That way I will regain at least 4 tracks.

I'll be looking into optimizing business. Also I have 9 gigs (out of 40gigs) of diskspace left. Could that be a factor also? I appreciate you all.

Did you reprofile afterwards?

Hmmm! there you go. I did reprofile some times but not every time I move the slider. So that could be it. Thanks alot. I'll experiment with that.
