Ok, I'm putting this in here, cause having this problem makes me feel like a noob. :D And yeah, so I know it isn't really a recording problem, but it's got to do with my computer. :o

Up until about 3 weeks ago, my headphone jack on my laptop (hp pavilion dv6) was working fine. I could plug in headphones/earbuds/speakers, and they would be nice and loud at around 40% of the computer volume. However, NOW when I use my headphones/earbuds/whatever I have to put the volume at 100% output, and it still isn't as loud as it used to be!

I need your help figuring out what happened. I don't recall changing anything recently...

I've done some trouble-shooting, and it's definitely not my listening devices, as anything that I try ends up quiet. I've looked at the laptop's volume "mixer" and everything is still at 100%. I've gone into control panel-->sound and that has all been good as well. I've run both hp and windows updates, and the problem remains.

It's driving me crazy lately! Please help! Any advice/assistance would be awesome.

Could it just be the cheap ass, 3 cent ad/da converter, made out of cigarette butts and hair, in a chinese sweat shop, that most all laptops are equipped? :D I can easily imagine that going out.. or at least the connectors in the 1/8 jack.

Yeah, that's what I'm fearing. I just find it strange that the signal merely got cut, and isn't gone completely though...

Sadness.

Hmmm actually both headphone jacks are having the same problem, so it must be something a bit further back in the chain maybe? Unless they have the same converter.

Have you gone through all the advanced buttons on the sound control panel?

Some laptops have a physical volume dial knob thing that seem to override any software settings. On the hp pavilion dv6 I think its a touch sensitive slider under the screen above the keyboard...

1st thing to try after you've ruled out a setting change: some connector cleaner.

The jack or plugs may have some corrosion thats dimming the volume.

Hopefully you've tried a different set of earphones, too....

Yeah, I've checked all that stuff out and no luck. :(

Yeah, I've tried several different headphones/earbuds. Thanks for the cleaner suggestion! That's the type of thing I wouldn't think of!

Well whatdya know...it's working now. I didn't change a single thing...

Freakin' rise of the machines :D
