I understand the concept of it, but is 5200 rpm (standard on imacs) enough to record 8 tracks simultaneously?

Theres really only one way to find out .... give it a try. If you get drop outs during playback, you may want to consider getting a faster drive.
Chances are you pry can but, if you plan to add more tracks and overdubs to the mix, you may start experiencing problems.

I'm a PC user, so I know nothing about the iMac but ..... can you add a second hard drive .... Maybe an external one via Firewire?
That would be the best configuration, having a second drive for the working directory of whatever recording software you use. OS, programs, plugins and etc.. go on the internal drive and Audio data stream goes to second internal/external drive. This will allow greater track counts and less chances of drop outs.

whoops, sorry, the standard is 4200 and i meant ibook, not imac. Good point about external drive, unfortunatly though, since its an ibook, i will be using the only firewire slot for an interface...maybe i could daisy chain it? The reason I have so many questions is because i don't have the ibook and interface yet, which means i can't experiment. I wanted to do some research on it before i commit.

Aahh Understandable.

I have an HP laptop and a MOTU 828mkII $750 and I can daisy chain the external drive off of the MOTU.
You can also get a powered Firewire hub for about $60 from Best Buy. If you have those where you are located.
