How important is a quality soundcard?

I plan to by a digital keyboard synthesizer and record onto a software sequencer. How exactly do I get the sounds that the synth offers onto the sequencer. I guess I would need a digital audio interrace that could plug into a soundcard with digital inputs. Also, is a quality soundcard important to bring the synth sounds to the sequencer? If the actual sounds are coming from the synth, is a quality soundcard necessary to "accurately interpret" the sounds from then synth through the interface through this soundcard to the software sequencer?
 
Not for the sequencer, but you're going to want to eventually record that audio. That's when you're going to want the best soundcard/A-D converters you can afford. When you're working with a sequencer, you're just recording midi commands, not the actual audio.
