i use +6 on ampex 406,407,+6 is hot for that tape,
but i found, when i recording bass (use mike),i still can hit the tape at +3 vu,and the sound still good!

how you hit tape when recording bass guitar?

more over bias is good for bass?

i also roll-off at 100hz,because recording to tape can bring the low end back? it's right?

There's no "right" answer to this. It's like asking how much reverb to put on a vocal.

No, analog tape doesnt boost below 100hz.

Actually...you can get a huge low-end bump below 100 Hz with certain tape decks and at certain speeds.

So you have to decide if you want/like it or not and how to EQ for it. One of the reasons a lot of R&R is recorded at 15ips on certain tape decks is the nice low-end bump. Some have bumps at around 80Hz...some as low as 30-40Hz.

yes,i use 15ips.

The head bumps and valleys shown are only 2db or less which isnt much in listening terms. But if you wanted to flatten this small deviation out by EQ at the record stage you'd probably also want to fix the small valley at about 150kz.

If you're recording the bass via a mic in front of the bass amp speaker this is likely to cause much more lumpiness in the bass response than tape head bump. If flatness below 100hz is what you're after why not record the bass direct?

the blue line is 15ips.
also record di,also roll-off 100hz:)
i think if you don't push hard,no need to do this.
