How Far Is Your Amp From The Floor?

Do you get better sounds when your guitar amplifier is on the floor or not? And if it isn't on the floor, how high from the ground to you have it?

I'm looking to get the best sound possible out of my amp and if it comes down to having your amp on the floor or not to get a better sound, I'm all ears.

Reason I'm asking is because I can't really tell the difference between them but I have a bad pair of ears so I really don't know whats going on.

on a chair

i have a fender deville tube amp, and i almost always sit it on top of my chair.

seems to me that it sounds cleaner and that the floor doesn't reverberate the low end so much. if my ears hear it that way, then i figure the mic must hear it that way too.

i'm thinking about building an amp stand out of the same birch wood i built my studio workstation out of.

I usually put an amp on a road case which puts it about 20" off the floor. It tightens up the lower end. Open or closed back.

You can also have a bit of both; tilt the amp backwards (as long as it's secure). Try it, you might even like it. It especially works nicely on little amps you are finding hard to hear the quality of.

Hello Whyte Ice,

if you can, check out EQ magazine, July 2001. the month is devoted to recording Guitars.

one article may be of interest: "Divergent Paths" by Randy Neiman. the article is concerned with capturing more spacious and natural mic'd electric guitars.

I am a fan of tilt back legs....especially on my Fender amps. It all depends on your micing technique, and more importantly your room, whether or not amp position difference matters or not. If you're close micing the speaker with a SMack57 (ref. MrQ), it's not really going to matter. If you're using a condensor from further away, you may experience different sounds, just depending on your other factors, including speaker size, room, and reflections.

tilt back legs??? was i asleep during that class?

how do you mount the legs onto the amp? i'd never thought of tilt legs. does the amp lay flat when the legs are down? if so, what braces the legs when they are folded out?

that's why i was going to build an amp stand. tilt back legs would be ingenious.

come on man, give me some info

ok

This is a Twin with the legs on it (I think they come on it now), but it's not tilted back. You can see where they go, though.
