How does this machine sound for a general purpose/DAW?

Hey guys!! My parents have inquired me to get prices and the like on a new computer. Here is the most current version I have that still fits our budget. I know it's not the OPTIMUM for a DAW, but it will be upgraded as time goes on. We're also about to build a house, so money is a little tight right now. Anyways, here are the basics...

Athlon XP 1600+
Epox 8KHA MB w/ KT266a chipset (I think that's the right chipset)
256MB of DDR PC2100 (for now, probably add 256 more later)
Maxtor 20 GB 7200 RPM (for now as well, will add another later if I really get into a DAW)

What do you think? I have heard rumors that the new XP Athlons get along with computer recording software and hardware better than past AMD chips. I've also heard that the new KT266a chipset is the best out, so far. Can anyone comment on this? I really don't want to go with a PIII because I also want to use this machine for gaming. A DAW is really just something I'm looking into because I'm really sick of analog on my 424MkIII. It's been awesome, but I'm ready to move on to bigger and better things. :) If anyone could give some feedback on this, I'd be very grateful. Oh, and as far as hardware and software, I am right now planning to use Pro Tools FREE and a STAudio C-port, although that is very subject to change. Any comments? Thanks in advance!!

COOL!! My 100th post!!! hehe

Brandon,

are you going to be building it yourself or having it built by someone else or a pre-built system.....

I will be building it myself. Also, I'm probably going to go with an Abit KG7 motherboard.

can you use anything from your old computer...i saw in the other thread you have one....if you can use the monitor,CD-ROM drive, keyboard, mouse, anything, it will help bring the cost down....

Hey Gidge!! The only thing about that is that we're wanting to keep both comps up and network them. I have got the price down to about $468, but there's a possibility that I can get it cheaper. I'm still searching through various sites. The one I'm using now is z-buy.com. You get free 3-day shipping on most items, of which is pretty cool. As far as a DAW goes, it will be a little while before I'm able to get a good sound card because, if I decide to go with a DAW, I'll have to sell my 424 to be able to buy a decent card and, to be honest, I'm not positive that I want to just yet. It comes in handy as a mixer sometimes. :) Thanks a lot for your suggestions, though!!

well, the computer is gonna need a cheapo soundcard so at least get a Soundblaster Live Value...its pretty awesome for its SoundFont and midi capabilities, and good enough to get your feet wet recording on the PC....you can get them for less than $50....sometimes as low as $25.....

Hey Gidge!! Thanks for the info. I probably will get one if I can find it cheap enough. The original MB had integrated, but the ABIT doesn't, so I'll definitely need one. I've got to be really careful about price, but if I buy that HDD off of my friend, that's $27 that I save. Let's go reconfigure!! Thanks again.
