A lot of threads compare the Shure SM7b and the Sennheiser MD421, sometimes even the Electrovoice RE20. Those mics tend to fall in category of dynamic mics that yield a great sound on a vast number of sources. I do understand that each mic has its character and that 'the best mic' is subjective, but I would like to know if the Beyerdynamic M88 is of the same quality as I cannot try the mics before I purchase. The M88 is significantly cheaper locally. I intend to use the mic on vocals, drums and guitar cabs.

What I mean, I have SM57, SM58 and D112. Is M88 going to be an improvement over what I have or am I just getting another flavor microphone. Especially for vocals. I've noticed that the SM7b is really clear on vocals and there is a significant improvement from the SM57. Also, lots of people swear by the MD421 on toms that they are better than SM57s. I cannot afford a set of MD421 for toms, I can only afford one high quality dynamic mic. Maybe I can use it on 1 drum / guitar cab and some vocals where I find a condenser does not work that well.

At the risk of an all out attack ...I've been knocked out by the quality of the Rode M1....I've tried a lot of mics.

I have Shures, EVs, AKGs ,Beyers and Sennheisers etc. but the Rode is really doing it for me.
