How do you achieve such a range? He's forty something, does everyone has the capacity to sing like this and it's down to practice/technique?

I didn't notice any great range in the main vox.

Hmm ok fair point - his delivery is quite powerful though, it seems he never struggles as such.

Yeah...good range is generally defined as the ability to cover 3 or more octaves and he kind of stays in his own space. Probably why he sounds "powerful" as you say. He's staying in a place that's comfortable for him.
