Hi everyone!
How do you guys pan your toms close mics when you have a mono OH/Room mics? Or when you have two mono or stereo OH/Room mics? It confuses me ... If i have a mono OH then the toms are in the middle but when i pan my close tom mics left and right it does not feel good. Do i need them at all with mono OH mic or i should simply pan them in the center?
And a second question: I am using XLN AD 2 drum sampler there is only one OH and Room mics but i would like to have two OH mics so that i could pan them left and right for a bigger picture... how can i to achieve that with single OH mic? If i simply double it and pan it it does sound like a mono not a stereo... To me two Room or two OH mics panned left and right sound better than just a one single stereo mic... I like atmospheric spacious old school drum sound build more around OH / Room mics rather than close mics.
Please share some of your sicrets how to achieve that ?
Thanks to all of you!!!!

Ahhhh....put up a pair of OH mics instead of one. :)

It's more common to put up a pair of OH mics, and with them, get an overall Left/Right stereo image.
Then you pan your close mics accordingly.

If you use one OH mic....it might be OK to pull it back in the mix and just add a touch of ambience with it, otherwise anything close miked that you pan harder and the OH mic up in the mix, the two may fight each other.

A pair of overheads panned left and right does it for me. No tom mikes.

Unless you have a really good sounding room you should probably skip the room mic.
