how do you make low subwoofer bass sounds?

i tried to get it with a 5 string bass but its still not comming out the way i want it. is this done with an MPC or something?

I assume your looking for a distorted rumble, in the lower frequency response range which is in-audible to the human ear, but merely felt?

lol yeah....i can create it with a 5 string bass on stage but i cant seem to do it in the studio

What about a synth? I can get great low bass sounds with both Reason synths and samplers.
Give an example of a song your thinking of maybe.

When you are recording your 5 string are you running direct or miking an amp?

One thing to check is your subwoofer in the studio. Probably you are using a 12" or 15" cabinet in your bass amp, but your studio monitors are 8"? 8" speakers do not reproduce below 50 Hz too well. So it might be in your mix, but you can't accurately hear it.

I'm building a 10" sub monitor to complement my 6.5" monitors.

i tried micing and going direct to get that rumble. I'm not stressing it. i'm trying to make a hiphop cd with no synth and basically guitar, bass and drums. i'll mess with that on another project.

have you thought about recordinga synth to double the electric bass. just a thought. I guess if you are trying to not use any you will shoot that idea down but sometimes its hard to tell that the snth bass is there.
