I have a vocal booth and I want to hang my microhpone from the ceiling where i can also adjust the length according to certain peoples heights. What would be a recommeded way of doing this? thankssssssss

i have heard of boom stands but dont know really what they are.. Can i hang these boom stands on the ceiling? im only going to be recording on one microphone so thats my primary concern. Thanks

A boom stand dosen't mount on the ceiling (or anywhere for that matter). It stands on the floor but has adjustable parts that allow you to suspend it overhead. This is accomplished by telescopic tubes and strategically placed joints.

hmm... i kno it gotta be someway you can mount that silly microhpone on the wall...oh well...Thanks for you people who took out your time to answer me.. i appreciate it...

A boom mic stand is nothing more than a regular mic stand, with an extendable arm that reaches out with a mic on the end. Nothing overly fancy.

To attach a mic to the ceiling, you have many options.

One is to have a hook (plant hook) on the ceiling, and make a loop in the mic cable and suspend it that way. Or even better, use a boy scout lashing and make a loop with twine so the cord isn't bent tightly. Mic cords last longer that way.

Another option is to attach the boom to the wall or ceiling, sorta of an upside down mic stand.

My friend had the best solution... he got one of those rectractable 100' extension cords in the spring loaded automatic coiler thing from Home Depot, unwound the extension cord, and wound in a 100' microphone cord. It hangs in the vocal booth on the ceiling. I liked this idea so much that I too purchased the retractable extension cord, and plan to do this myself once I finish constructing my new studio. He claimed it took him an hour. I'll double that based on my mechanical ability.

Here's an idea:

Why dont you buy a short kik drum mic stand with a round base, then bolt the round base to the ceiling and then attach a boom arm to the round base? That way you can adjust the length, heighth, and you could possibly be able to swivel the boom as well.

Just an idea, but in my head it would work!!

Here's my question...

Unless the iso booth is just too small to accomodate a standard boom, why would you opt for a ceiling mount instead?

I don't see any advantage to permentantly mounting a microphone anywhere, not even on a ceiling.

If the placement is what is important to you (and that should be what is important to you) get yourself a boom.

You can adjust it over, in front of or just below your vocalist.

The whole ceiling idea seems kinda strange.

:)

opps...I already had a boom stand... im just going to use that...I didnt know what it was called..Thanks for all your replies

Excuse me I'm not making fun of you..

I am curious. How does someone have a "Vocal Booth" and yet not know what a "Boom" stand is? I know I'm getting very old. When I assume that the people I'm working with understand a technical term that I'm using; and they get this blank look on their face, and just stare at me like I'm speaking Bulgarmainian...

Excuse me I'm not making fun of you, I guess we all had to learn these things when we were first starting out.

Oh by the way; I like the plant hook Idea.... The advantage is that it takes up less space in an already crowded room.

Sincerely
Dom Franco

I worked at a studio for a while that had 2 booms mounted on the ceiling for drum overheads. Very small drum room, and it helped keep them out of the way ... it also made it easier to position the mics where you wanted in such a confined space. I'm not sure where they got the hardware for that, though ... they just looked like flat plates with a mic stand thread welded to them ... and then with a normal boom screwed on. Nothing fancy ... they probably had them made special at a metal shop. Or I think I remember seeing a desktop mount that would screw to the desk ... that would probably work too. It was at markertek.com, I think.

Oh im not embarrassed...i can kno about some of the most complex shit but when it comes down to simple stuff sometimes i can forget some of the most simplest stuff..u kno? well maybe you dont..but im going to try some of these ideas..thanks

they make these clamp style mike 'stands'. It's kinda like a C-clamp with a Mic thread on the end of it. You can get these at MARS. I believe they also have the snake adapters. So you sould clamp the thing to the cieling, attatch the snake, attatch the mic, and adjust as desired.

Hanging your mic from the wall/ceiling

Heil mic stand that hangs off the wall costs about
$150:Would give you URL but this site it wont let me...

A ceiling mount is kind of unusual, but one thought...

Radio studios often use a spring loaded boom arm that either screws or clamps onto the desk. I suspect one of the screw variety (no double entendre intended) could work upside down and be mounted from the ceiling. Have a look at something like THIS. This is just one that happened to be top of the Google pile but there are certainly others it's worth researching.

Worth a look methinks...though be aware that the more you bend the arm (for taller vocalists) the more space behind it you'll need.

Doh! Caught by thread necromancy again. Clearly this is not going to be a good day for mental activity.

Going back to bed now (well, I wish I could...actually getting ready to take my son to the Optician to pick up his new glasses). My broadcast boom idea was still good though, though I'm not sure "better late than never" doesn't really apply here.
