are my ears lieing to me?its hard to detect a major difference between mics especially LDCs,(atleast to me)matching voice to mic they tell me :rolleyes:boy oh boy this feels impossible.i dont know how you guys divide the good from the bad(if there is any  )i do believe that there is a mic for every situation :) i just dont get how yo guys find it.do ya get a tingle or something???

This is why excellent monitoring in an excellent environment is "Step One" in making good recordings - You can't tweak what you can't hear. If you can't hear the difference between "Mic A" and "Mic B" that can be a problem... I would imagine "Preamp A" and "Preamp B" would have limitations also.

See, that's the thing - If your monitoring chain isn't reproducing these differences with some measure of accuracy, you won't be able to hear the difference no matter how hard you try. It might tell you the "bulk" or the difference (more highs or more lows) but won't let you "zero in" precisely on what's going on.

Sorry to 'jack this thread but...

If one werent to have a good monitoring system (who, me?) could one be able to discern the difference in a good set of cans?

It also depends what mics you are comparing. If you are comparing lower end LDC mics the odds are they are pretty much the same mic. I'm not saying all chinese LDC mics sound the same because they don't. But the odds of finding chinese made LDC mics with similar sonic response pretty good.

What mics are you testing your voice on?

listening just like the music is an art itself... some people have the ability to hear things in songs that other people "Do Not" me for instance i can hear where every part of a beat should be set if its all mixed up in different pieces

chain has been said
similarity of many cheep mic's has been mentioned

your ear will adapt, you litterally learn to listen better.

getting some dank headphones will probably help too.
(if you can't afford good monitors)
