Just wondering if anyone knows what the top artists like Dr.Dre/Snoop..etc use for their beats

Well it is a mixture of reasons....

First u start with a quality basstone

Then you can filter out unwanted frequencies...

And then a big part of the sound is what console you run it into (SSL, Mackie etc.) and what outboard gear you use (compressor, low frequency stimlators etc).....

after all of that then the placement of the bass sound in camparison to other sounds in the mix will dictate alot as well....

A lot of elements go into making a sound thick and clean...

This approach usually works for me.
1. start with a simple sine wave generator.
2. Use a bass processor that will do something like a. double the octave, b. invert the wave-form, or c. add distortion. I know there's a free VST plugin made by MDA that does a nice job.
3. Add a small touch of chorus or some short multi-tap delays, and your tone should shake the roof off.

Peace,

Matt

how i do it :

smack 3 saw oscillators together on my supernova, put the filter down on a 24db/oct or 12db/oct (18db/oct doesn't seem to produce good bass sounds....) then i put some resonanse on it and modulate the filter cutoff with an adsr envelope so it'll get a little extra punch in the beginning (modulatingone or two sync oscillators by a similar envelope can also give extra punch)

then i eq it...
