Alright. Assume that I have drums recorded on Cool Edit and I am now going to be recording guitar. How can I make it so I can hear the drums AND GUITAR while I record the track? Thanks

send the recorded drums out of the card into your mixer (assuming you are using one). then your guitar (accoustic? electric? is it mic'd or DI) into the mixer. monitor from the mixer. Use an aux send of the mixer to send only the guitar to your sound card.

Post your setup so it will be easier for us to help you....Knowing exactly the equipment you are using will help us do that.

Ok. This is the equipment that I am probably going to be getting. I want to be capable of recording 8 tracks at a time.

MIXER - Soundcraft FX8 (Phantom power, 8 direct outs)

SOUND CARD - Audiotrak MAYA 1010

PROGRAM - Cool Edit Pro 2.0

MONITORS - KRK RP5 Rokit Powered

MICS - Shure SM57(snare, guitars), 2 Samson C02 Pencil Condensers(OHs, Acoustic Instruments, etc..), MXL V63M Condenser Mic with Shockmount (Vocals), 4 Shure PG56s (Toms), AKG D112 (Kick Drum Mic)

Rack Gear - dbx 266XL Compressor

This is the set up that I am probably going to be getting. I think it will be well worth the money for a project studio. What do you think? Thanks a lot.

assign all of your drum tracks to play back outs 1 & 2 of the sound card. send them into the mixer. if you are micing a guitar amp. plug your mic into the mixer, and send the direct out to channel 1 of the sound card to be recorded. You can then monitor the drums and guitar from the control room out of the mixer. If your guitar is being recorded in the same room where you are monitoring, you will probably want to use headphones instead.

EDIT:

You said your mixer has Direct Outs. I dont know if it does but ill bet those are inserts. If so, and you use a TS plug (mono) to go to your sound card, you probably are not getting sound in your monitors. Inserts take TRS plugs (stereo). If you are using TS, only insert the plug about half way, to the first click, this way, the sound gets to your sound card and you are still able to monitor it.

hope this helps...
