How do i use sm57 properly?

I cannot figure this out. When i record with my sm57 the level is really really low. I have never tried other 57, but to me this doesnt seem right.
My ADK Hamburg records really high and nice at the same level on my Lexicon Omega. Ofcouse i realize they cannot really be compared.
Anyway, the 57 seems somewhat useless to me, except maybe for recording amplified guitar - but i dont have a loudspeaker for my amp at the moment, so i cant check it out.

Since everybody speaks so highly about the 57, i guess im doing something wrong.

A little afraid to ask this questions, since im sure the answers will leave me stupified

Seems like some of these firewire/usb interface preamps are lacking gain for lower level mics. Goodness try pluggin a ribbon into that thing and it would go home crying. You can try just recording the highest gain setting you have and boosting in the mix, which isn't all that bad, unless there is a lot of noise that comes with the boosting. Another option is get an out board preamp that has more gain than what your unit has now. VTB-1 and DMP3 are good strating points, but there are better preamps for more money.

Turning up volume and boosting and stuff is not what im looking for. Too much noise. I´ll consider the vtb-1 (actually you can allready now find a topic from me about it in this forum).

Compare output of any dynamic and a condensor mic and you'll get the same results.

check the phase if you're using them at the same time, try closer mic'ing w/ the 57, or use it on louder sources, it's a good mic, used extensively, takes a beating.

impedance matching transformer

Hi,

I'm not sure if this will work with your rig but with my Fostex VF160 I have been using xlr to xlr mic cables and then going through low to high impedance matching transformers. The Fostex has eight 1/4 inch inputs but only two xlr inputs.

By using the matching transformers my mic run is low impedance but I get better gain at the deck. As a cautionary note these transformers can pick up noise from computer monitors or other electronics. Always listen carefully for noise before recording.

Many of the mics I use are dynamics similar to your SM57. The transformers cost $12 or so and they are also good for plugging low impedance xlr mics into high impedance PA amps with only 1/4 inch inputs.

Dynamic mics have a lower output. That's one reason you can use them to mic loud sources (like drums) without having to use a -10db pad. (or -15 or -20) Switch on the pad on your Hamburg and you'll notice the levels are about the same.
