How do I throw an effect to just one drum?

I have a drumset being recording with about 6/7 mics (depends). That goes to a mixer, that goes to my computer, and then I will DAW it with my pluggins, etc. I was wondering, whats the best way just to get say, the kick drum onto one track, etc..thanks..\

PS, sorry this is a newb quesiton, but u guys are smart.

you'll need separate inputs into your computer for each track you want to record at the same time but keep separate. If you only have stereo inputs...two tracks then. A more costly sound card that has 8 inputs (or more)may be required for doing drums, therefore with a multimic setup going to many tracks.

likewise, your mixer will need separate outs for each " recorded track" that you want separate too...on your computer. But with many small mixers, you can still get multiple outs,... with the stereo main outs, effects out, monitor outs...etc. They add up quick. Some not as flexible as others, but usually functional.

Is it possible you could do some of your song WITHOUT the kick drum?

If so, then you could add the kickdrum all alone with whatever FX you want.

yeah, you are recording only two tracks at a time....one way to isolate that one drum (bass or snare i assume) would be to pan everything all the way to the left except that one drum which you pan to the hard right. set you're daw up to record track one from the left channel of your soundcard and make a second audio track and set up the input so that it's gettin' only signal from the right that'll give you isolation in your daw...but if you're dooin' any kind of stereo stuff while you're trackin' then you might hafta make a compromise somewhere.

This could be tricky.

In order to add an effect to just one drum, then as others have suggested you have to separate that drum from the other drums. Even if you had each drum being recorded on it's own track, I'd assume you'd still get some bleed through coming from other drum mics.

Maybe in this case The Green Hornet's point would work best for you. Give it a try.
