How do I strip only the differences between the left and right tracks of a stereo recording and leave only what is common to both the left and right. If I can figure out how to do this, the resulting track could be used as the surround sound track(s) and the phasing would not affect the original L & R so much. Any advice.

Try this:
Effects > Filters > Center Channel Extractor
:D

I could not find this in edit waveform view, however I did find a similar function in multitrack view.
View > multichannel encoder > panning asignment > Center only mono
Is this what I am looking for or does this add the left and right channels toether with a db drop?

I'm not sure if that's the same thing.
I think the effect i was refering to is only in Audition 2.0.

It is also in Audition 1.5 which I now have access to on a friends system. I used a memory stick to tranfer my un-modified wave files. I found the extract center channel and experimented a bit but with all the possible variations it will take a long time any my buddy will only allow me a few hours of working on his computer. Would you know what settings I should use to strip away the majority of the differences between the left and right leaving a mostly mono signal in the left and right tracks. I can then test it by doing an invert mix paste from one track to the other. By the way I would never have gotten this far without your help, thanks! :)

No prob.
I think there is a preset for acapella.
Keep in mind the preset isn't perfect, you could tweak it to better suit your audio.
Also you'll probably be left with some artifacts.

Thanks for the speedy reply, I'll give it a shot and get back to you. :)
