how do I "post-process" my RY-8 drummachine sound?? [compression, EQ, ...]

Hi there,

I'm currently recording a song with my drummachine. It's a yamaha RY-8. It sounds very reasonable, and fairly "realistic" when compared to most of the drummachines I know about.

The only thing is.. it sounds a bit "direct" which [among other things] makes it sound less "realistic" than a real drumkit. It lacks sparkling highs as well.

Now, I know that it will never sound like a real drumkit, but still I'm curious how to post-process my sound to fix it up a bit.

I want to add slight compression [not too much, since it's a digital drumsound, which is probably already compressed]. Also I would like to EQ a bit. I don't know how to setup my parameters for those fx.. I cannot find information on the internet regarding post-processing a DRUMMACHINE sound. Enough info on real drums though..

On my drummachine I have NO options for soundprocessing other than volume and pan. So the only thing I can do is post-process the recorded stereo-track.

Any ideas?? I'm especially interested in compression.. But any enhancement-idea is welcome ofcourse.. Thanx in advance.

Greetz,

How many outputs does this unit have, and what are you recording on?

How many tracks are to be dedicated to the drums?

What outboard gear do you have?

thanx for your reply!

well, the output of the drummachine is ONE stereo output...

On the drummachine, I have cymbals, hi-hat and ride panned left and right, and toms as well.

I cannot mute samples on the RY-8, and play a song or preset with just one sample at the time to record it on separate tracks, since I play these drums "in real-time" on the pads. The song I am recording now is "to live is to die" by metallica, and that song is way too long for programming it into the RY-8 anyway..

So.. I open up Cool Edit Pro 2.0 [my recording device] and import the original song, while playing along with it on the pads with three fingers.

the sample I posted is a part of the total recorded stereotrack as it has been recorded.. You'll understand that I don't want to start over with recording drums, so I want to use THIS track.

I only have the digital plugins and fx that Cool Edit Pro can handle.

In the mean-time I've tried some compressing by trial and error.
Here's a sample of the sound uncompressed, followed by the same piece WITH a compressed track mixed in with the original one to a suitable blend. No other fx used yet.

compression test

Am I getting somewhere? I'm not sure... To me it only sounds like a "slight"improvement.. And I need EQ for sure IMHO..
