I am recording from a vsr880 to logic via rbus. I cannot hook the vm3100pro up simultaneously, so how do I monitor? Is there a way to route the master outs to my sound card instead of the rbus?

The RBUS sends 8 signals back to the VS. You need to assign your tracks in logic to a pair of outputs and you should be able to access those from the VS for monitoring. I only use the VM so I don't know exactly how to do it on the VS.

But if you have a VM3100 why are you recording through the VS? If you just need to dump the tracks over from the VS you can monitor them from the VS itself.

This is a brand new pc, I just installed Logic, I am trying to dump the tracks I have on the VS into Logic, but didn't have the VM with me. I want to monitor from Logic to make sure everything is working ok. I guess I'll just go get the VM & swap them out for playback. Still, it seems odd you can't route the output to the sound card.

Which card are you using? Do you have the RBUS only card or the one with additional analog jacks?

You can assign the Logic track outputs to any usable outputs on your computer.

I have the rbus only card. My sound card with analog audio outs is built into the motherboard (Epox 8kha+)

You might be able to use the onboard card for monitoring. See if it is available as a playback device in Logic.

It would seem like there should be a way to select what to monitor. The RBUS card driver by default assigns tracks 1/2 to a monitor mix (TURN THAT OFF FOR TRACKING AND MIXING OR IT WILL REALLY SCREW YOU UP!!!). Within the VS there should be a way to select the RBUS channels 1/2 as inputs for specific tracks or just for monitoring.

I wouldn't worry too much about it for dumping tracks. Since the transfer is completely digital you shouldn't see any change in tone or levels than what you see and hear on the VS. FWIW When you record with the VM you will actually be monitoring directly through the mixer and not off of the sound card.
