How do I know if I can sing well?

I play bass in our little rock band. Our singer recently quit, and the other band members sugested that I just sing. I always thought I had a so-so voice. Until I saw American Idol. Those singers are terrible, but hey, they must THINK they sound good too, right? Well that shook the little confidence I had in my vocal abilities even more. What if I sound like that? It's so hard to judge my own singing. Any suggestions?

why don't you record a song, and then post it. You'll get more feedback than you can shake a mic at!

Nothing has improved my singing and playing as much as recording myself. Listening critically, and going back to redo the things that i can fix, and rethink the things I can't. My limitations as well as my best points became clear pretty quickly. Armed with that knowledge, I can concentrate on what do best, and try to improve on that.

I suggest you just try it and you'll know soon enough what you can and can't do.

Ok, I'll record a little clip of some cover song. Remember I'm a bass player, so my guitar skills, recording skills are a little weak.

record a quick mp3 of yourself singing acapella and post it here. That's a sure fire way of finding out if you can sing or not.

Ouch.... !! Boy... sure fire is an understatement.

we're waiting...

dude, just grab a mic and sing anything and post it. acapella. just like on american idol. there's no shortage of critical ears around here, and we don't know you so we won't lie. so......let her rip.

i fear if you play guitar or something you'll do like everyone else and mix the vocal too low. so go with just you and a mic for now. by the way that's also one of the best ways to practice singing imo. nothing but you and your voice. then every flaw jumps out. and it jumps out even better if you do it with a condenser rather than a dynamic mic, if you have one handy. if not, get one. get a cheap one and sing into it, then listen to yourself really loud! and post it here.

Ok, I have a 30 second clip. Is there a way I can upload right now, so you guys can hear it?

Thanks.

1. go to nowhereradio.com and get an account. it's free and works very well.
2. upload your song. don't feel dumb if you can't figure that out right away. it's not as intuitive as you might think. 'artist administration' -> 'album manager' -> 'edit/add songs'
3. come back and link us to your 'singles' page.

Bare with me, I have the music on a CD now, but I cant get it into MP3 format. Anyone good with this sort of thing?
Thanks again.

pm chad (participant)...he has a mp3 converter program...easy to use...maybe he'll see this

Thanks, I guess I'll give singing a shot. I was paranoid I'd make a fool out of myself. I'll post something as soon as I can.
