how do i give the most memory to my recording program

how do i set my computer up to give all of it's resources to the software programs that i am using to record? i am running windows xp.

my computer freezes up when i start using a lot of plugins in acid 4.0 i want to upgrade my memory, but if that is the only program running then 128 pci and a 1.8 gig processor should be able to push that application if it is the only one open right? do i have to turn off smooth scrolling and all those other effects that windows have to free up more memory?
 
XP handles memory allocation mostly on it's own. Trying to beat it as it's own game is usually not productive.

Lockups are usually not related to memory (unless you have very little) but to software issues.

If you haven't checked out www.musicxp.net, take a look there for some XP tweaking tips.

As far as 128mb, I wouldn't think that would be enough RAM to run your system smoothly. Even if you only have ACID running, XP is quite a resource hog...System processes alone on my PC that are required to be running by XP add up to a little over 30mb. So now your under 100 meg for acid. And those plugins eat up RAM like a fat kid eats cake.

btw, RAM is damn cheap these days. I say go buy yourself a stick of 512mb (probably under $100 at newegg.com) and you shouldn't have any problems at all.....

that is...assuming it IS a resource problem and not software related... Isn't it fun playing "why is my system F*cked" Detective? :-(

trogdor's recommendation is a good one. I did not see any refs in the original about how much RAM you had. I use 512 and all runs fine for lots of apps.

As he says, RAM is cheap, buy some.

If you press CTRL,ALT,DELETE while your recording program is running, it will bring up the processor window....click the tab marked 'applications'.

Find your recording program and (I think) right click on it...a menu will appear with the topic 'priority' in it....You can set it to higher priority where the computer will devote more to this program than others running.

you can also stop uneeded programs from running and allocating memory in the task manager, anti virus, im, things that run in the back ground not being used, just find them on the start menu when you need to use them again...

i really apreciate the very good sulutions to my problem. i am going to try the task manager technique as soon as possible.
