I'm part of a metal band that owns a small basement studio. We are starting our new album and what I really I am really looking for a specific type of sound for the drum tracks. I've got a Tama Rockstar (fusion) with a shure 4 peice mic set (1 beta 52, 3 sm-57s), two more sm-57s for snare, and two overheads (mxl 603s). What I'm really trying to get is the kind of sound that Lamb Of God gets on Ashes Of The Wake. I'm gonna be buying some new heads this weekend, and I need some help on what I should buy to get that kind of sound. Also any tips on mic placement would be very helpful... I'm kinda new to this.

I swear the sounds you are looking for are triggered sounds. You aren't going to get them from a real set. At least not a fusion sized Rockstar and a bunch of 57's. The sounds you are looking for are processed within an inch of their lives. The processed sounds are used to replace the sounds of his real kit when he recorded it. That is assuming that the drums weren't just programmed in the first place.

its all about the mix

Ey! i know exactly about what you mean with getting "that sound" in my experience, it's all about the mix. i've worked with professionals too and they work a lot with "EQ" and compression. your basic reverb machine/plug-in sweetens it even more. try playin around with it a lot. o yeah, monitoring is important here, so get a good set of monitors. and in mixing, never drown your ears for more than 5hrs. of listening during mixing. always take a breather on that.

It'll all be samples. So go buy some ddrum triggers, drumagog and away you go. you could sample the kick from the actully cd so your drums would sound identical to the ones on the CD.

.......as they'd actully be the same kick sound. :D
