Hi, im a little new at this, How would i get started to turn my computer into a recording studio,? what software would i need?

thanx

How I got started

I got really really lucky. That is how I got started. To make a long story short... I had a friend hook me up with pretty much everything. (thumbs up to jitteringjim) I bought the computer and the Sound Blaster Live (most IMPORTANT with digital in/out)

And he hooked me up with the rest...software and a/d converter.

As far a software goes. I really prefer Samplitude, for I have found that it is the MOST user friendly.

if you are just starting to use the PC for music, the first thing is that there are a lot of options out there....with a pc you can accomplish a lot with little money if you are focused on what you are trying to do....however, there is nothing wrong with experimenting, going into something without knowing whether it will work....most of this comes down to budget....there is a lot of free and really cheap software that can be used to acheive results that rival cost intensive crap....

I'd start out by going to a bunch of web sites and downloading free trials of their software. Try Sonar, N-tracks, CoolEdit, Vegas, and any others you can think of.

Download the manuals, too, if they have them available. Keep playing with the different ones out there untill you either find one that works for you, or untill you just give up in sheer frustration and run to Guitar Center to buy a hard-disk multitrack recorder.

Check out my listing on ebay for the Emagic Audiowerk8 Home Studio Kit. This is an all in one setup with plenty of effects, etc... at a price thats very affordable for a begginer. retail 1000.00
selling for 250.00

as for software....N-track is what i'd choose...esp. if you have no idea where to start. It's really simple....and as long as you are fairly good with computers in the first place, you can figure out really anything you need to know. and if you can't, the n-track forum or even better this forum (it has an n-track section) could help you out easily.

www.n-track.com

plus its dirt cheap.

I'm in the same boat

I've been recording on a digital 4-track for the past year... partly because my pc is a piece-o-cr*p. However- a friend is hooking me up with a great computer with a cakewalk program on it.
I am twitching to get started on recording some high-quality stuff this way. Is n-track easier? Explain it to me like ya would a 4-year-old.
Is Cakewalk all I need? Can I still use my Dr. Rhythm for beats?
What other program can I get for mastering purpose?
What I need is cheapo, huge sound and easy!!
...so the Soundblaster live is a good soundcard?
Thanks!!
