How do I get rid of clip/click @ segment's end/beginning?

Hello,
I'm using Cubase VST 5.1 that came with my E-Mu 1820 system.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the click/clipping sound that can ocur at the beginning and end of an audio segment when that segment begins or ends with some audible sound other than near silence. I've been running into this problem when doing punch-in's.
Are there any plug-in's that reduce these pops?
Does Cubase provide a function that will allow me to target this problem quickly and easily or would I have to go in and manually set envelope parameters for each segment (or something of the sort)?
I've read a little about a "crossfade" function, but I'm still unsure of what it does or how to use it.

You've got the right idea- the clicks are happening because the sample value when the clip starts is not at zero. I don't use VST, but just adjust a fade in envelope for under 10 samples.

Do you know where I would go to do this (I mean in Cubase)? I'm not trying to be lazy, I've just prodded around a lot already without a lot of luck.....
