I want my snare to sound like the snare on "the missing pieces (new version)" at:

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/154/nothing_to_lose2.html

it's the first song. I've heard this snare sound in lots of other bands. How do they get it? Is there a special head to use? Is sounds like it's compressed with a slow attack...is that right? Do I need a wood snare? Or even a vented maple snare?

help me out!

good overheads, good close mic placement, and good new and well tuned snare head. i doubt its a wood snare. I think in this style of music, the close mic is more important. Then it would take good compression. Usually to get a sound like that it takes a attack at about 15 ms, and a release at 5-10 ms. Higher the attack if you think it needs more punch. The ratio should be 3:1 to 5:1 and 1 to 4 gain reduction on most hits (be in between). Youl want to expirement probably. Also, you could try putting a little compression on the overheads. This will make the drums sound a little more bigger and wider but could slew out the cymbals a little. Also, on overhead placement, i hear alot of people try putting the overheads right by the ears of the drummer. personally, i dont think this sounds as good when its all mixed. put your overheads nice and high to get ambience, but always watch for phasing (check in mono).

Try some stuff.
