How do I get more "unique" effects?

Hiya! Some of you have mentioned different effects racks/software on this board, but I don't know enough about this stuff to rely on my own research.

I use Cool Pro and I love it, but as many editing features as Cool Pro offers, it doesn't have nearly enough effects. I would like to create more "interesting" and original sounds out of the usual instruments, such as guitar and keyboard.

It would be nice to have more new-age style synthesized effects to add to a sound in real-time editing, rather than just the usual reverb, echo, flange, etc. What does Vangelis use to get so many unique and brilliant sounds?

If anyone has suggestions, please email me, if you don't mind, at jonsheltmire@excite.com with your ideas. I'll post this on several boards for greater results, so you may come across this one a few times.

thank you in advance!

Hi

I don't know if i got your point but here goes.
I often use a lot of different gear to make my FX sound a bit more interresting and i often combine all my boxes to fit the particular tune i'm on for the moment.

for example, you'd be amazed how a synth patch could sound thru a cheap Alesis Microverb III, a wha wha pedal and a guitar Distortion stompbox!

Now i don't know wich type of music you're into and what
"sound" you're looking for , but experimentation is a very good start..

If it sounds good..... it IS good..

You can try different outboard gear like gutar effects processors or vocal effects or rack effects, whatever. The Behringer Virtualizer Pro isn't too hard on the wallet (I've seen em for $150) and has some interesting effects. Try combing lots of weird effects. Old vintage MXR boxes are always fun, same with Electro-Harmonix. Buy a MXR Blue Box and and you'll think that your speakers are about to blow into 500 million little pieces. Ring Modulators are fun too, and are relatively unique. Lots of vintage stuff is really far out there. e-Bay is your friend.

hey, jr

which Ring Modulator would you recommend? I'd love to find a good cheap one to cause sonic chaos.

Cool!

Thanks again, guys! To Jrlemonz - I like the sound of what you're talking about, although I have no idea what all of that stuff is. I create many different types of music, from folk to acid dance and new age, so I like really far-out, spacey, new age style sounds, like Vangelis creates. I know how to use what I have, but I'm not well-versed in so much of what is out there in regards to equipment (limited budget!). You say ebay has this stuff? Is that a website? I'll have to check it out. I'm embarrassed by my lack of technical savvy, but hey - that's what you guys are for, right?

I use a Korg AX-1G for a ring modulator ($100 in Musician's Friend). I know people that use the bass version of the same pedal for a guitar to get some whacked out sounds. The new Ibanez pedals have that "whacked" mode on a couple of the pedals that give you some pretty cool ass noises too. I have never heard anything by Vangelis. I do have a program called Fruity Loops which mimics a TS-404, and one of the presets is called "Like Vangelis Delays". They were this really glassy echo sound. I use to have an Electro-Harmonix Memory Man (still can't believe I sold that) that has some awesome analog delay/echo sounds. Very full sounding, but $200 and has to be plugged into the wall (sucks for live). Delays can add so much to your sound. Gated reverb is a cool effect too. Fattens up every note.

E-Bay is an online auction site. http://www.ebay.com
There are tons of FAQ's on their site I would imagine about how it works. It is your friend. You could search for years and not find things that come up with one small click on e-Bay. Be wary of the term vintage though, it doesn't always mean good.
