Hey all, this is my first time posting here. I have been reading a lot lately and I am just getting into home recording. I was wondering how I can diable my onboard soundcard so I can use a better one? Right now my computer locks up when I put the other soundcard in. This computer was a hand-me-down from my father in law so I don't know a lot about it. Here is some info that may be helpful:

AMD K-2 500 MHz
C_Media onboard soundcard

The other soundcard that I have is a Aureal Vortex AU8820 (i believe). I know it isn't great but it is a lot better than the onboard one.

Thanks for any help,

Adam

There are acouple of things you can try:

First, look in the BIOs. On most PCs you get into this by hitting the DELETE key while it boots, on some it's by hitting the F2 key. Look through the menus for any setting that lets you disable it. This is the prefered way.

If you cant find anything in the BIOS, go into the Controll Panel /System / Device manager and find the audio hardware. go into the properties and select the box that says "disable hardware in this profile".

Be warned, sometimes in PCs with on-motherboard hardware disableing a device will still not release the resources (IRQ, DMA) that the device uses. You will just have to try it and see.

or sometimes its a jumper on the motherboard that enable/disables - Check your mobo manual

yeah, it's probably a jumper. see if you can download the manual. it should have info on which jumper you need to disable.
