How do I copyright a company name?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to get started with my own business, and was wondering what steps would I have to take for getting a company name copyrighted. Also, is there a way to check if the name(s) have been registered by another company?

You can't...company names (& company logos, icons, etc.) are protected under the trademark act. You will need to trademark your company name & images.

If I register a company name, that I unknowingly knew exist, I don't want to have any legal issues with that company in the furture.

Will I need a logo in order to register a trademark?
 
You also need to check your State business licensing... Every state I know of has a business name registration, but every state varies in its laws.

Big Hint there: Doing business in most states without a proper business license (so they can collect taxes) will end you up in jail!
 
Thanks for the heads up. But I already have the info on getting a EIN number and registering with my local county. I just need to get the info to register (copyright) a busniess name. After hearing what happened to P.Diddy and the Diddy case. I want to cover my ass. :cool:
