How do I build cables

I know how to use a soldering iron and have a basic understanding of electronics. I fancy making my own leads, can anyone link me a good tutorial of some kind that has a couple of pictures I know how to do it? I think I can figure out jack leads but XLR seems a little more complicated! Thanks!

Also does anyone know a cheap place to get hold of cabling and adaptors in the UK?
