i was testing my tm-78, thinking it sounded so bad that i was gonna give it to a friend... and i am getting a at4040 in the next few days.

to my surprise.. they had identical sound and the tascam..maybe sounded a bit better.... woow.

no i am not using a pre amp but i decided to buy the dmp3 this week end...

am i missing something?

Do you have the mono button pushed? Is your monitoring system better than your car stereo? Could be that they sound the same, could be dozens of other things. Samples?

i duno if you were talkin about a separate preamp, or if you actually think you're not using one at all, but this came up earlier in a discussion about a usb mics, and it makes me think it's worth pointing out....

you are using a preamp :) there are two built in to your interface.

yes, mono is on... dont we hae to for vocals though? keep it centered and all

lol i mean no external preamp... it got me wanting to buy the dmp3 to see if my sound will go up.. i dont want the 4040 to sound the same as the 3035 because the preamp is not sending the signal clear enough.

Not really, you can generally configure the software to your desired route(s). The mono button is more for checking for phase issues and other things. All of the mixing is generally done in post. Vocals are normally imaged dead center so you can do the karaoke thing to it. Otherwise there's really no "need" if something else sounds better and you don't need/want the karaoke thing.

Are you mixing both mics via the mono button? Or is each it's own event at different times?

if i dont mono,, it's going to literaly record it on the left side of the track.... which i would have to mono with the software after.. then stereo.. but i dont think it impacts the quality.

i was abotut to buy the DMP3 and got a nice deal on the Octopre Dynamic MKII for 450$

if i can afford both and all i do is vocals..

which one would go best with my mics?

If you do mono with the mono button, you get an additional noise floor of a second preamp added to your mono track. Making mono stereo in software is relatively hassle free and quick to accomplish. Not to mention taking half the space when saved to disk as a mono track. Half the CPU needed to decode at playback and other things. If you are recording a single channel from a single mic, you are recording a mono track.

What's that about?? No mention whatsoever from the OP about his car stereo.

i think he's just saying that two different mics could very well sounds similar on a bad monitoring setup.

i think i must have had temporary ear cancer.. when i listened two days ago, the difference was clear.. the samson is thin and the at3035 warmer and fuller..

my bad for the useless thread.

still.. i am getting either an at4040 or at4050

The 4050 would be a more versatile microphone suitable for a larger range of recording possibilities due to the changeable polar patterns.
