ok, if you just want to add to your shmear and looking for an all-round great mic for almost anything...and don't care for the sm57 (honky) mid-peak but want a cheap all-rounder?

I have found the older EV nd257 to be an amazing mic for the $23 spent on ebay
FYI
use it like sriracha...on everything

I have one of these. I have used it for live vocals and selected places on a drum kit. It actually does ok on kick if you have nothing else. One of my sons got a decent recording of an older Epiphone acoustic into a 4-track cassette with it.

Well, do you want a condenser mic or a dynamic mic? I use two mics in my little studio. One is a Neumann and the other is an Oktava 219. I paid 125.00 for it but I got a backup for $60 on ebay. I use it with a Presonus TubePre you can get now for $50 or so, but you don't have to if you have something with phantom power. I love these mics. They are ugly as hell but a great sounding condenesr microphone for the money. The Neumann I use in the booth and it was a little more than $50...

its actually a ev nd257a...if that matters. but with the right pre (built some of those 7th circle pres) if sounds great....just sounded ok with an older plat. series focusrite

the oktava...miss that one alot and don't think you could ever do better for the price (at least what they used to be) with that one

spend 20 more dollars and get a Blue enCORE 100i from ebay. It's Blues version of a 57, and it sounds much better IMO.

I have an old PL80 that is pretty bassy but it was a good quality mic for girls. If you google EV nd257 you get a lot of good comments from a number of sites.

Years ago I bought a $10 mic from a Fred's. It was so easy to use. Very natural. Just plug it into a stereo and go. It was blue. the shape of a '57 but with the typical metal circle grill. I have no clue what happened to it. I guess things get more complicated when you learn more. It would be nice to still have it. I bought it for trampoline wrestling purposes when I was 10 or so. I had a first act guitar when I was 7 that I threw away because I thought a broken string couldnt be fixed. It's so weird I didn't even listen to music back then at all. and now 8 years later...

AKG D320B- $36 on ebay
AKG D770- $36 on ebay
Shure SM82- $20 at flea market
Oktava MC012 X2- bought new at Guitar Center- $50 each
Behringer XM8500- $20 new
