I think a guitar lick thread would be good for everybody around here. I know I am obsessed with picking up new licks and new phrases to build upon, isn't everybody else?

Considering the ease with which you can pick up software for creating tabs, or even just creating tabs in text format, how about we start posting up our best ideas? We could even post a mp3 example of the lick.

Is this too ambitious of an idea, or could I actually get some participation?
I think it would be fun to interact with people in this forum and see what everybody is all about.

What do you say?

I am SO down with this idea. I'll put a few up this weekend. I've got a few good metal/lead/progressive/blahblahblah ones to offer up.

For a request (weird as this may seem), I'd like to see somebody toss out some bluegrass/county/chicken pickin' type of things. There's a whole world of guitar playing out there that's completely alien to me.

Okay then. Here are a couple of random licks that I just tabbed out using Guitar Pro here at work. If I do some at home this week I'll post some clips with it.

The first is a pretty straight forward E minor lick with a spark of E Diminished in there with the Bb note. There is some economy/sweep picking involved if you play it real fast, and some finger taps thrown in for good measure.

The second is a quirky sounding string skipping lick in E minor/G major (depending on how you use it and where you go with it) that I think sounds cool when done pretty fast. I play it with strict alternate picking with the exception of the slides.

The third is a plain old E Minor lick just because I felt like posting 3 instead of 2. It also features some economy picking.

Edit: I should have said pay no attention to the time signatures, I just tabbed the licks out in one long bar each....they're just licks, make 'em fit ;)

Apparently this idea is not quite as popular as I thought it would be.

Nobody else has any licks to digest?

Actually, I think it's a great idea. I wish I had the means to share licks. BTW, thanks for the cool licks.

Okay, let's give it a shot. Good exercise as an intro to alternate picking.

E------------------------------------------------------------------
B------------------------------------------------------------------
G--10---------9---------7-------5---------------------------------
D----12-10-12---10-9-10--9-7-9---7-5-7-9-7-5-------------------7
A----------------------------------------------8-7-5-------------7
E----------------------------------------------------8-7-5-0-3-0-5

Play in straight groupings of four using alternate up down picking strokes (palm muting a little sounds really cool) and end it on that hanging A power chord.

Good one Purge, thanks for posting.

I think I'll work on another one.

excellant idea man. I;m not a super skill guitarist that can do noodley solos but I can offer some tricks.

I will post one tonight when I'm not at work.

I've always liked this one, and it's very simple...it's a variation of a Dimebag run:

E---------------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------------
G---------------------------------------------------
D----------------------------------9-11-15-9-11-15-
A------------------9-11-15-9-11-15-----------------
E--9-11-15-9-11-15---------------------------------

E---------------------------------9-11-15-9-11-15-17/19-
B-----------------9-11-15-9-11-15-----------------------
G-9-11-15-9-11-15---------------------------------------
D-------------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------

Sweet stuff guys....I'm gonna have to break out the guitar and try these. I need some practice..... :D

Here's another lick that I like alot. I think I stole this from Kirk Hammet or Dimebag. I play this one with alternate picking in groups of six. This sounds good with some palm muting and is an easy way to climb a pentatonic scale really fast without it sounding too plain. The full step bend / release / bend at the end is just one idea, this lick could lead into about anything, especially a nice flurry of pull-offs or something.

if you could post little mp3's, that would rule.

I'll throw down a quick recording of the licks I posted tonight or this weekend.

I'm having fun doing this now.
Here's another one. This is a sort of snaky little run with a little economy picking and a few slides and hammers. Once again, ignore the note values, I don't think that last note should be a 1/16th..... :p

Here's a quick little something that I picked up from a buddy of mine. The guy is an insanely great guitar player, so I asked him once to show me something that would make me think differently about the instrument.

This is a basic C major scale. The difference is that the notes are played in the normal "ascending" order, but they are all at different octave pitches. Play it, and you'll see that your ears will barely recognize it as a scale. It's also a great little run to practice string skipping if you use the fingering shown at the bottom. Try doing this with other scales that you tend to get a little too "familiar" with and it'll open up some strange cool things.

.....C......D........E.......F.........G........A.........B......C

B-----------------------------------10---------------
G---------------------10------------------------------
D--10---------------------------------------9---------
A---------------7------------10----------------------
E--------------------------------------------------------

this is a little cheezy metalcore riff that i like, because it sounds like 2 guitars playing, but theres only one

(drop D tuning)

p.s. whats a good place to host short mp3s?
