My friend and I have been recording R&B and Hip Hop vocals fro about 4 years now. We are in the process of building a 15' by 11' home studio in his backyard dedicated to recording vocals. I am quite confident with my technical and mixing skills that I had learned at my recording engineering school. We are running Pro Tools 9 on Macbook Pro, a Tascam DM24 as a control surface, DIGI 002 as our audio interface, and an Avalon M5 and Focusright Twin Track for mic preamps. What are some reasonable rates for tracking and mixing vocals? We plan to charge by the hour. What are others experience with hourly rates in regards to tracking and mixing R&B and Hip Hop vocals? Is $15-$20 per hour too steep of a price? Any advice is appreciated.

Go ahead. Which side are you on ?

And as for answering the question, I probably wouldn't charge by the hour if I were you. You're just starting out, you don't have a range of equipment, a vast variety of mics to choose from, or a kick ass recording room. Just keep a set rate per song.

I guess this is a subjective question. It will greatly depend on the results you can get out of your " room"..Example: I had a young friend that I taught that went on and set up a "room" to record in ( actually, it was an outside metal utility barn about 12' x 16')..back when the Adats and 1" reel to reels were popular. Thing was, this kid was extremely talented as a musician/songwriter/producer/arranger and his production normally recieved lots more praises than most of the works coming out of the other Adat/tape based studios in the area..His 'studio" was centered around a Tascam 688 cassette recorder..!..When he would finish tracking/producing his projects, he would bring his 688 to my studio and I would line out of the Tascam into my console and mix his products..First class tracking arrangements..Back then he was charging $30 an hour without any complaints from the clients..Good luck
