Hi,

I'm about to purchase a second hand Fender Hotrod Deluxe amp, because I'm tired of that Fender solid state I own. Does any of you guys have any experience with the hotrod deluxe and maybe advice for the purchase?

and is the small version really live enough to rehearse without a PA?

Thx for reactions

Hey BrettB.
I've had a HotRod Deluxe for about 5 years now. For the money it's a pretty good amp, depending on the type of music you play. Its strength is its clean tone, as is the case w/ most any Fender amp. Nice, clean and crisp. The distortion is also very useable, in a blues/ classic rock kind of way. If you're after heavy metal distortion, look somewhere else. I find the EQ to be very musical as well.
I use it mainly in my studio, but I have played live with it on many occasions. It's plenty loud to jam along w/ a band without micing it, though you would probably want to if possible, to give the sound guy a fighting chance...

thx for the reply

still one question: I like to experiment with feedback and other sort of guitar noises. Can the Hotrod Deluxe cope with it, or do I need to take extra precautions?

It's as reliable and well-built as anything else you're likely to consider. Your comments lead me to believe you're thinking distortion. In that case I would just give it a good listen first and make sure you like its distorted tone.

It is a pretty loud amp and should hold up very well with a full band. No PA needed. In fact your bandmates will probably ask you to turn down. You can get very loud clean with it.

I would use a overdrive or distortion pedal though the normal (clean) channel. It will feedback just fine.

thx for reply's

my plan is to use my tube screamer on it, with perhaps as extra's my DS-1 and of course my wah

When I meant feedabck, I just wanted to say I like to experiment with a lot of noises (like Tom Morello does) and I just wanted to be sure I can't damage the amp or the speakers while doing this.

Can't really damage the amp circuits with feedback I don't think. You can damage your hearing though. Any ear ringing after playing is a sign that damage is happening. Go to a quiet place right after playing and sit still. What do you hear?

Use high gain and volume settings on the pedals and adjust the volume on the amp to get the feedback. Or use the pedal with the "Drive" channels. You can damage any speaker with extremes but don't worry about that. I think usually quick, loud, clean deep bass shots can cause more damage than high, loud feedback. Worry about getting good tones and not damaging your hearing. I think the speaker in the HRD is rated pretty high in watts. 80?

I thought it was only 40 watts

I'll see when I get to try him within a few weeks. And I usually know to play and make nosie on a way that my hearing doesn't get damaged thx for your concernµ. Although, a fellow drummer hits the drums that I hard I have to take my amp to the extreme. And then my ears suffer:-)

That amp is loud as hell. I played once with a guy with a crate half-stack. It was louder than the crate that was halfway up, and it was only on 3/12. plus it sounds good. The smaller amp may do you.

it rocks ass

I have this amp, I bought it 7 years ago, at that time it was called "blues deluxe". It's loud, and when it's warm and driven high enough, it's got a good valve distortion. I think that with humbuckers you can get a good 70's style dist. I'm playing it with a strat, and three different types of fuzz pedals: boss fz-2 and fz-3, ibanez soundtank fuzz, dod grunge, plus dunlop wah plus dunlop rotovibe.
all pedals come through really rough and grainy with the clean channel of the amp, solid indusstrial sound, while on the distorted channel, the fuzz's distortion is smoothed out, adds a lot lot more warmth, but cuts off a bit of the basses, and to me sounds like real magma. You get incredible larsens.

the clean channel's got huge basses, good clarity, all frequencies are balanced.

I just love this amp, very usable , rock solid, beautyful look (I got the tweed version) perfect sound for me (better than marshalls, or mesa in my opinion).

thanx for the great replys all. I just can't wait to have him in my possesion

drummers, man those guys are wwwwway too loud lol, hey do yourself and the band a favour...buy a 4' x 8' x 3/4" thick slab of clear plexi-glass, cut it in 3 pieces, the middle being 4' x 4' , and the two sides being 2' x 4' ........get some heavy hinges and bolt them 3 peices together, slam it in front of the drummer, and your stage or rehersal space will be able have a killer mix without blowing speakers, ears, or singers vocals. merry christmas.

if it was me the two amps in fenders range id choose would be either the Fender v65 twin which will cost you more then the hot rod deluxe but last you a lifetime or get what you have picked in the hot rod deluxe i would not also discount secondhand late 60,s fender amps from time to time if you know where to look they will come up at a bargain price just some food for thought
