Spent most of the day doing this one. Mixed after my ears were already dead, and was half-asleep. Wanted to get my guitar speed up a bit, so I wrote this one. Lemme know any thoughts, especially if the lyrics are intelligible. Tough one to mix.

"Gonna Break"

"Gonna Break Updated"

"Gonna Break Updated again (with Brad's awesomeness!)"

Also - if anyone wants to do some wicked solo work in the middle, feel free. I can barely play rhythm, let alone do any shredding whatsoever.

Thanks guys.

bit heavier than your normal stuff...all sounded good to me...could just make out the lyrics but this things speakers are shit anyway, liked the tempo change...though going back into the shredding bit Id have just left a bit of silence then whooomf back into "gonna break", the change up sounded a little awkward

could just be me though mate :)

I like the song, but don't really like the mix. The low end on the guitars and bass is boomy and again the drums lack body and power. They're loud enough, but they just don't sound right for the song. The snare sounds great, but the kick and toms are a tiny little attack with no meat behind them. The vocals are almost totally unintelligible to me, which to be honest, is fine with me 99% of the time. Kudos for stretching beyond your comfort zone, but this doesn't sound like it was comfortable for you. And for what it's worth, I say leave it as-is with no shred solos. I listened like 5 times and didn't once think "man I wish this had a blazing shred solo all over it".

Hey Jason, I like this one - good energy and attitude! You know I'm always up for guitar work for ya - I don't hear a clear lead spot either, but it maybe could use another guitar. Possibly some alternative noise type rhythm noodle thing would help. I can fiddle with it if you want. I'm curious what you used for guitar tracking though, like what amp and how many tracks you did.
Was it hard to scream like you did? I liked it a lot! I can't seem to do it - I have 'screamer's block', I wish I could do it - I don't know how.
Anyway, good job on this - I need to listen again on my system to see if I can hear what Greg was talking about with the bass and guitar.
:D:cool:

Hey, I like the tune. Lots of cool changes in there. I too would recommend against screaming leads on this one, but that might be cool too...

I guess maybe I didn't like the overall drum sound as much on this as some of your others, but certainly still good, just different. I guess I can't pinpoint what it is though, but there are many others with better ears for drums than myself, so...

I had a hard time making out the lyrics at times, but I think I got most of 'em. I did think your voice sounded really good on this. Great energy.

I'm a fan of buried vox but this needs a little clarity. Fine in the change though.
Very much a sound like old ACDC.
There's def some boom in the room.
The speed up bit doesn't work for me personally. probably not frenteic enough.
Good song - needs your ears to be in a better state I think.

(Disclaimer: I listened in mono because my right headphone is out.)

I liked it overall. Heavy and angry is good!
The vocals were a little too buried everywhere except the bridge.

I disagree with Greg; I could see some soloing over the last few vampy choruses to really finish the song strong. (However, I cannot provide them!)

Cool song!

I like the song. Strong simple chorus with the title. Overall I liked the mix, the subs could come down a little and the kick could have more punch as Greg was sayin. The vox during the verse should come up quite alot, but during the chorus they cut better, so not as much. I think you could put a lead in it, but I agree that its not like its missing from the song. Kickin groove and attitude!

Pete

The transition from slow back to fast sounds a little wierd to me also. I like a quicker rise but then again, that's just my opinion. I like the sound and the double hits of the snare though, but maybe just a bit lower. If it were brought down just a bit it may effect the perspective of the others also. As for the song, I really like it.

Vox part sounds good. I like the voice, is that you? I'd like to hear the 'Gonna Break' parts a smidge louder. Buried is good, but not quite so much. I think the intent is to get energy from it and so they should be more prominent. And maybe more tracks singing/shouting it, so it sounds like a bunch of people.

Lead solo?? it could go either way. Good as it is now or add one. either way is good.

Cool.

Thanks for chiming in, Keith! Even if it was only on a netbook... :laughings: No.. The more places it sounds good, the better it ultimately sounds, so... Thanks, dude.

...Waiting for the next KC Trance Masterpiece...

Yup, yup, and yup. I practiced this song for about a month before I could play it well enough to record it, and (as noted) it is still very shaky, but I'm proud to announce that I'm much faster on guitar now than I was before I started playing this song. Go me! Drums - noted. Not sure why the toms sound the way they do, but I've got a whole new kit I'm working with, which sounds night-and-day different than my old Gretsch kit. Love the snare. Love the kick, but I'm still dialing it in. Love the toms, and I'm sure the problem is mic placement. I think for the solo, I'm gonna see what Brad can come up with. If he doesn't wanna shred, fine by me. He kicked it in the head with Pot of Gold's solo, so I trust his judgement.

Anyway... Thanks for the comment, and, as usual, your ears are spot-on. I updated the mix up top taking into account as much of the consistent feedback as possible. Changes made were:
1. Took EQ completely off kick (had a 10db increase at about 5k) and upped volume to compensate. Hopefully more boom now, with just as much attack.
2. Rolled off lows from all guitars, and upped gain by 2db.
3. Upped vocals 1.5db.

Amazing how much clearer the new version sounds to me now. Hopefully you agree.

Dude, Brad - (see my response from Greg above) - please... You're welcome to do anything with this song. I know it'll make it better. My ideas are a bit of soloing where the 3rd verse would be, and after the bridge here and there, as appropriate, ending with frenetic spasms of awesomeness. Only if ya have time, bro. It'd be a treat for me to have you play with it whenever you can.

Guitars were 4 tracks of my Epi LP, with 4 different settings on my Line 6 Spider IV 75 - and two tracks of an Ibanez S570b with two more different settings from the same amp. All mic'ed with a Joly-modified Apex 205 ribbon (which drops my jaw every time I hear anything mic'ed with it. *highly* recommend his modded mics)

Yes - that's me screaming. At 2:30am. Did all the verses in 2 or 3 takes each, and layered the "Gonna Break" thing as much a I could stand, and called it good. Came out much better than I thought (and completely different than I had pictured in my head before I actually sang / played it)

Thanks for the comment, Brad! Lemme know what you need to start fiddlin'. (You rock, dude)

Thanks, Pete! The drums sound different probably because it's a whole different kit. Cymbals and all are all completely different. Went from a Gretsch birch kit to a DW maple, and from Paiste's to Sabian AAX's. So... heh... Yeah. It's all different. Kind of surprising you don't like it as much as the other, because I'm over here drooling...

Thanks the the comment (and the honesty).

PS - I voted for your song. Death Ray still rocks my world. Great work there, man.

Hey Ray! Thanks for the comments...
I don't like the speed-up either, truth be told, but I really don't think the song in and of itself warrants a whole lot of work. It was just something I came up with to help me play guitar better, and I thought that doing a constantly increasing tempo would prove to be a challenge on all fronts. Maybe Brad can do something with the speed-up to increase frenecity... (is that a word?).

Remixed version up top. Hopefully it sounds better. I re-mixed it in a much better state.

Thanks, dude.

Thanks for chiming in, Steve! Wow... not only mono, but one-ear! haha... Probably sounds like utter crap. :cursing: I'll see if Brad can come up with some soloing, because I hear the same thing you do.... Good solid crazy ending.

Cool song!

Thanks, Pete! Took pretty much 100% of your suggestions to heart in the new updated mix in the OP. Great ears, man.

I like the sound and the double hits of the snare though, but maybe just a bit lower. If it were brought down just a bit it may effect the perspective of the others also. Brought the guitars up to balance out the drums a bit. I thought they were too loud, as well, but only by a hair.

Thanks for chiming in, Steve!

Yup! That's me. I was screaming at 2:30am after having been pretty much tired all day long. It felt great! :listeningmusic: As far as the chanting part, that should be cutting a bit more now. I raised the overall vocal part 1.5db.

I hope Brad has time to play around with some extra guitar parts, too. I think it'd be awesome.

Pretty cool. Sounds punchy! I am with you man, I hope that the greater good will prevail also...

Thanks! I think the new drums sound 100% more punchy than my old ones. ..and yes, greater good prevailing is always a good thing, unless there's no rock 'n' roll in heaven.

Yeah, I like the new mix better myself. The whole mix sounds a little lighter, but in exchange, there is greater clarity in the lows.

I do like the sound of the new kit (forgot you'd got one - oops!), and like it better on this mix. I just liked the sound of the old one a lot. I will adjust ;).

Thanks for your support in the contest and of course for your help with that tune. I still hear different little things that you added each time I listen. You currently represent 20% of my votes! :o :D

Ok dude, I got two blisters for you! Yea, it's been awhile since I picked up my guitar, with the minutia of the CD getting out and a new drum set in the house, well, it's been a few months...:o
Anyway, I got some stuff comin' your way :D

Cool song. I like tunes that start right in your face. It sounded like a Poetic Intensity tribute to GregL. for a while there. :laughings:

I listened to the "updated" version. I still think you can bring the vocals up quite a bit. Right now, they're there, but they're just part of the mix. If that's what you intended, then it's cool. But they're not as "in your face" as everything else.

Drums sound good. I don't care for the slow part and the speed up., but kudos on doing something un-expected...maybe it just needs a smoother transition.

Like I said, it's a cool tune.

So, I got a solo from Brad Smith, and as expected, it pretty much is as perfect as it could possibly be. Updated mix up top, or right here.

More comments on your comments soon. Gotta run. Thanks for all your suggestions!
