im only my tiny netbook today but wanted to say good work PI
bit heavier than your normal stuff...all sounded good to me...could just make out the lyrics but this things speakers are shit anyway, liked the tempo change...though going back into the shredding bit Id have just left a bit of silence then whooomf back into "gonna break", the change up sounded a little awkward
could just be me though mate
Thanks for chiming in, Keith! Even if it was only on a netbook...

No.. The more places it sounds good, the better it ultimately sounds, so... Thanks, dude.
...Waiting for the next KC Trance Masterpiece...
I like the song, but don't really like the mix. The low end on the guitars and bass is boomy and again the drums lack body and power. They're loud enough, but they just don't sound right for the song. The snare sounds great, but the kick and toms are a tiny little attack with no meat behind them. The vocals are almost totally unintelligible to me, which to be honest, is fine with me 99% of the time. Kudos for stretching beyond your comfort zone, but this doesn't sound like it was comfortable for you. And for what it's worth, I say leave it as-is with no shred solos. I listened like 5 times and didn't once think "man I wish this had a blazing shred solo all over it".
Yup, yup, and yup. I practiced this song for about a month before I could play it well enough to record it, and (as noted) it is still very shaky, but I'm proud to announce that I'm much faster on guitar now than I was before I started playing this song. Go me! Drums - noted. Not sure why the toms sound the way they do, but I've got a whole new kit I'm working with, which sounds night-and-day different than my old Gretsch kit. Love the snare. Love the kick, but I'm still dialing it in. Love the toms, and I'm sure the problem is mic placement. I think for the solo, I'm gonna see what Brad can come up with. If he doesn't wanna shred, fine by me. He kicked it in the head with Pot of Gold's solo, so I trust his judgement.
Anyway... Thanks for the comment, and, as usual, your ears are spot-on. I updated the mix up top taking into account as much of the consistent feedback as possible. Changes made were:
1. Took EQ completely off kick (had a 10db increase at about 5k) and upped volume to compensate. Hopefully more boom now, with just as much attack.
2. Rolled off lows from all guitars, and upped gain by 2db.
3. Upped vocals 1.5db.
Amazing how much clearer the new version sounds to me now. Hopefully you agree.
Hey Jason, I like this one - good energy and attitude! You know I'm always up for guitar work for ya - I don't hear a clear lead spot either, but it maybe could use another guitar. Possibly some alternative noise type rhythm noodle thing would help. I can fiddle with it if you want. I'm curious what you used for guitar tracking though, like what amp and how many tracks you did.
Was it hard to scream like you did? I liked it a lot! I can't seem to do it - I have 'screamer's block', I wish I could do it - I don't know how.
Anyway, good job on this - I need to listen again on my system to see if I can hear what Greg was talking about with the bass and guitar.

Dude, Brad - (see my response from Greg above) - please... You're welcome to do anything with this song. I know it'll make it better. My ideas are a bit of soloing where the 3rd verse would be, and after the bridge here and there, as appropriate, ending with frenetic spasms of awesomeness. Only if ya have time, bro. It'd be a treat for me to have you play with it whenever you can.
Guitars were 4 tracks of my Epi LP, with 4 different settings on
my Line 6 Spider IV 75 - and two tracks of an Ibanez S570b with two more different settings from the same amp. All mic'ed with a Joly-modified Apex 205 ribbon (which drops my jaw every time I hear anything mic'ed with it. *highly* recommend his modded mics)
Yes - that's me screaming. At 2:30am. Did all the verses in 2 or 3 takes each, and layered the "Gonna Break" thing as much a I could stand, and called it good. Came out much better than I thought (and completely different than I had pictured in my head before I actually sang / played it)
Thanks for the comment, Brad! Lemme know what you need to start fiddlin'. (You rock, dude)
Hey, I like the tune. Lots of cool changes in there. I too would recommend against screaming leads on this one, but that might be cool too...
I guess maybe I didn't like the overall drum sound as much on this as some of your others, but certainly still good, just different. I guess I can't pinpoint what it is though, but there are many others with better ears for drums than myself, so...
I had a hard time making out the lyrics at times, but I think I got most of 'em. I did think your voice sounded really good on this. Great energy.
Thanks, Pete! The drums sound different probably because it's a whole different kit. Cymbals and all are all completely different. Went from a Gretsch birch kit to a DW maple, and from Paiste's to Sabian AAX's. So... heh... Yeah. It's all different. Kind of surprising you don't like it as much as the other, because I'm over here drooling...
Thanks the the comment (and the honesty).
PS - I voted for your song. Death Ray still rocks my world. Great work there, man.
