I am brand new (I mean really new) to home recording equip. I have been a professional musician for years but never messed wth anything other than a 4 track cassette. Now I have an 8 trk reel (Fostex) and a Behringer 1604a mixer. How do I set up to record and both monitor and listen back to what I am recording? Any tip would be helpful. Thanks!!!!

If the mixer has direct outs, used them to feed the inputs of the mixer. Feed your mic's into the first 8 channels and out of the direct outs to the deck. Then bring your deck output into the next 8 channels of the mixer.

You can listen to what you are recording on channels 1-8 and what you have just recorded on 9-16. If you send them to a diferent bus on the mixer you can A/B them. Most of the time the latency between the two is small and is not an issue. BUt some times it is. Some decks let you monitor the input while others the output. NOt sure if yours has deck can switch between the two or not.

Hope that gets you started.

if the mixer does not have direct outs, you can plug a 1/4 cable half way in the insert jacks.
