Hey, as probably mentioned too many times already on here recently, I'm getting married in a couple of months - we talked a while ago about doing a cover version of something together for the first dance. She got cold feet on the idea, but I thought it would still be fun to do one anyway and maybe we'll find a use for it somewhere along the way.

We chose Home by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes to duet. This is her first time even using a microphone, and I think she did a triffic job.

All comments, issues, thoughts much appreciated as ever.

Cool, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment adema. Getting the right feel was one of the main challenges here I think - the original has such a loose, band locked together in a room feel that's hard to replicate when you're tracking each part separately and by yourself. I decided not to go for a carbon copy (not that I probably could anyway).

Cheers man. It was as fun as I'd hoped it would be and she was patient enough with my Phil Spector style diva demands from the chair - definitely something to repeat.

Thanks a lot for the listen mate - I'm really pleased with how the vocals work together too. I've kind of got used to mixing me, so it was fun trying to mix a female voice for the first time.

The other thing I was trying to achieve - was getting some control on the low end in my mixes. Low end mud has been one of the recurring themes in feedback, so I tried to really focus on that here and also use what I've learned on the site - I think the results are much better, but with a crappy monitoring environment, it's hard to be sure. Cheers dude!

No, not too icky. I was worried based on the description, but this was a fun listen. You sound good together. I don't know the original, although the melody and some of the lyrcis sound vaguely familiar.

I'm listening on my tracking phones right now, so hard to say much about the mix. It doesn't sound muddy though - maybe a tad muffled? These phones are typically on the bright side and this wasn't too bright sounding.

How'd you do the drums? They're pretty dark but cool sounding. The panning is nice as are the guitar sounds...and of course, the vocals.

Ace, thanks Pete - all the above is good to hear. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out too - you may well have heard the song without knowing it - I'm sure it's probably found its way into a number of tv shows etc.

Glad you liked the drum sound. I've resisted the urge to go down the ez drummer route etc because people seem to spot them a mile off. I've just built up a collection of quite a few acoustic kits that I'm pretty happy with, then I build up a few patterns and tweak some of the velocity/placement in some of them so it's not overly quantised. There's not much of that in this mix as the verses are just kick and hi hat with snare and toms added in the chorus. I wanted to keep the percussion sparse and organic sounding. There's not much in the way of processing either - I made an EQ cut low down to make some space for the bass guitar and then tailed off most frequencies above 10k. I don't really like bright sounding drums much, so I feel it gives me that lo-fi hip hop type sound that I love to hear in drums. There's no other processing than that in this one.
